Cross-Checking the Courtroom: Obamacare, fair housing and Coyotes vs. Glendale

The Supreme Court is beginning to release its rulings on the most controversial cases remaining in this year’s docket.

This week, they issued opinions on two of the six remaining blockbuster cases: Obamacare and a Texas case based on the 1968 Fair Housing Act. John Shu knows several of the justices having been a White House attorney (for both presidents Bush) who worked on the confirmations of several Supreme Court justices. He weighs in on the two cases that were decided this week.

On the local front, the city of Glendale is suing the Coyotes to get out of paying $15 million in contractually-required annual fees. The Coyotes reaction: “Hey, we had a contract!”

Glendale has argued that they Coyotes broke state law by hiring former city staffers who worked on the negotiations with the city. How strong is their case? KTAR legal guru Monica Lindstrom explains.

Programming note: Next week, Paul Bender joins the Think Tank. He is former dean of the Arizona State University law school who was also once a Supreme Court clerk. Bender will present his analysis of the four primary cases that have yet to be decided by the Court.
