Get to know some of the Valley’s Dreamers on Think Tank
Spend an hour with us this Sunday and you will probably never think of Dreamers quite the same way.
Dreamers have been in the headlines as of late. President Donald Trump has said that their status in America will be reviewed unless Congress enacts legislation legalizing their status.
But who, exactly, are the Dreamers? Clearly any group of 800,000 will defy any singular description.
This week, we invite three Dreamers into the Think Tank to tell their personal stories.
How did they come to this country? What obstacles do they face? What have they done? And what will they do if DACA, which provides temporary legal status, is revoked?
Our guests:
• Reyna Montoya, who graduated from Mesquite High School in Gilbert and received two bachelor’s degrees from ASU and a master’s degree from Grand Canyon University. She is the founder of Aliento, which uses art to help children dealing with issues detention and deportation.
• Karina Ruiz graduated from Sunnyslope High School and received a bachelor’s in biochemistry from ASU. She is executive director of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition.
• Martha Maurer came to the U.S. when she was 9 years old. She and her family arrived in Phoenix on a tourist visa. She graduated from Barry Goldwater High School in Phoenix and has a degree in journalism from ASU. Martha oversees all news content at KTAR and is a fill-in anchor as well as a special topics reporter, mainly on immigration.
