Prop. 123: Educational salvation or guarantee of underfunded Arizona schools?
In two weeks, voters will be asked to approve Arizona Proposition 123.
Both sides agree that this will put some money (about $300 per student) into the hands of our cash-strapped schools, though only about 70 percent of what the voters mandated in an earlier election.
But Prop. 123 contains a number of other provisions, and opponents have argued that they will guarantee the Arizona’s public schools will remain at the bottom of the national ledger for decades to come.
- It raids the state land trust, a federal grant to the state of Arizona given at statehood and dedicated to education.
- It contains several “triggers” which will either permit or even REQUIRE that the Legislature cut its funding for K-12 education in Arizona at some point in the future.
Former California Congressman and charter school consultant Frank Riggs joins us to argue the case for Prop. 123. And the irrepressible Jana Boomersbach takes the con side.
